| Sept. 19 - Chinese Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing met with U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice in New York on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly on Monday and both agreed to further strengthen bilateral1 ties.
During the meeting, Li Zhaoxing said that both countries should put into effect the important consensus2 reached by Chinese President Hu Jintao and U.S. President George W. Bush with regard to advancing the Sino-U.S. constructive3 partnership4 in the 21st century, make sure the Sino-U.S. strategic dialog go on well and promote bilateral interests. As to the Taiwan issue, Li Zhaoxing said that China appreciates the U.S. stance of maintaining the One-China policy and opposing Taiwan independence. China hopes that the United States will abide5 by its commitments and handle the Taiwan issue with caution, Li Zhaoxing said. For her part, Rice agreed with Li Zhaoxing on promoting bilateral interests and reiterated6 the One-China policy. Li Zhaoxing and Rice also discussed other issues including Iran 's nuclear issue and the humanitarian7 crisis in Sudan's Darfur. Both agreed to keep consultation8 on the two issues. After the meeting, Li Zhaoxing also attended a meeting that also included foreign ministers from India, Brazil, South Africa and Mexico.
