| Chinese' loose administration and immunization of their pets acctuall make them the No.1 potential killer1 in the country. The dogs in the picture might raise great risks to passers-by. |
| Chinanews, Beijing, September 26 – The epidemic2 of rabies, one of the most fatal infectious diseases (with a death toll3 of nearly 100%), has been rising in China these years. As a matter of fact, rabies epidemic in China is the second most rampant4 in the world, the first being in India.
The epidemic in China has kept rising since 1997, and most cases have happened in Guizhou, Guangxi, Hunan, Guangdong and Hubei. In 2006 alone, 1,874 rabies cases were reported, a 29.2% growth compared with last year, making the disease the No.1 killing5 infectious disease in the country. The number of pets in China has been growing rapidly these years, but the administration and immunization of pets has not. The poor knowledge of the public as regards the danger of rabies leaves them totally unprotected against the disease. Only very few people know the importance of rabies vaccine6 inoculation7 after being bitten or scratched at by a healthy-looking dog or cat.
