Ancient sunken boat to be salvaged in Guangdong

Chinanews, Guangzhou, Apr. 11 – According to Guangming Daily, the comprehensive “Nanhai Ⅰ”salvage1 project has been launched on April 8 in Yangjiang, Guangdong Province. The Guangdong Department of Culture, the archeological group from National Museum, and the Guangzhou Salvage Bureau of the Ministry2 of Communications will jointly3 accomplish this mission. The ancient sunken boat will surface in the forthcoming July.

 

“Nanhai Ⅰ” sank under the water during the Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279), some 30 sea miles away from the Hailing Island. The archeological group has launched 8 missions in order to find the specific location of the ship. It is estimated that there are more than 60 thousand cultural relics4 aboard. Experts reveal that the sunken ship can provide evidence on China’s history of navigation and shipbuilding.
