Chinanews, Urumqi, Oct. 11 – As oil resources become increasingly exhausted1 in the eastern part of China, Chinese oil giants are exploring new oilfields in the west region. Kuche, an oilfield in Xinjiang, has now emerged as the main oilfield in the region.

 

According to geologists2, the Tarim Basin has rich oil and natural gas resources, and it is expected that their deposits account for one-third and one-fourth of the total oil and natural gas reserves in China, respectively. The Tarim Basin is fast on its way to becoming a main oil production base in China playing a very important role in safeguarding China's oil security.

 

Kuche County is the core oil zone in the Tarim Basin. It is located in an oasis3 in the northwestern part of the Tarim Basin and covers a total area of 15,000 square kilometers with 60% of the land being covered by the Taklimakan and other deserts. At present, the amount of the confirmed natural gas deposit in Kuche reaches 2 trillion cubic meters, accounting4 for 90% of the total confirmed deposit in the Tarim Basin. The amount of the confirmed oil reserves in Kuche is 2 billion tons, accounting for upwards5 of 92% of the total confirmed oil reserves in the Tarim Basin.

 

In 2005, workers exploited 6.2 million tons equivalent of oil and natural gas in Kuche County. At present, the amount of crude oil produced in the Tarim Basin has exceeded 10 million tons, making it a major oil production base in Xinjiang. By 2010, it is expected that the oil and natural gas produced in the region will reach 16 million tons equivalent and the amount of oil produced in Kuche alone will reach 10 million tons, overtaking Liaohe Oilfield to become the third largest oil production base in China, only next to Daqing and Shengli oilfields.
