60% high students in Shanghai believe in resurrection, poll

Chinanews, Shanghai, Apr. 28 – Shanghai published a survey report on primary and middle school students education on life issue on Thursday. The report finds that most primary and middle school students do not have a clear idea about life and death issues. Strangely enough, the older the students are, the more they believe in “coming back to life.” The report suggests that schools should educate students more about life issue. If necessary, some social institutions might intervene1 to help students.

 

In order to do the survey, researchers interviewed some primary and middle school students, their parents and teachers from 48 schools in 6 districts in Shanghai. They gained 4,652 effective pieces of feedback2 in return. The contents of the survey cover various aspects, including students' knowledge on life, their feelings and attitudes towards life, their living conditions, their survival3 skills, and the environment for education on life.

 

When asked “Do you really believe that some people can come back to life after death, just like what has been described in some films or novels?”, 86.3% of the grade four students and 81.5% of the grade five students say “no”. However, as students enter into higher grades, such proportions5 become smaller and smaller. It turns out that 49.8% of the junior high students believe resurrection and for senior high students, the proportion4 reaches 61.4%.

 

The survey finds that kungfu novels, films, online games, parents superstitious6 belief, and some widespread social ideas are to be blamed for students' belief in such things.
