Huge queues form at the Suzhou railway station in east China's Zhejiang Province as crowds of returning golden week holiday-makers try to purchase tickets home. Railway stations across China are facing a ticket shortage1 as the May Day holiday draws to an end.

Beijing Daily Messenger reported the Beijing Railway Station had to open all its emergency exits to cope with the extra traffic as more than 200,000 train passengers transited2 through the station on Sunday.

 

The numbers of train passengers were rising on May 6, the second last day of the national holiday.

 

180,000 people took trains to Shanghai on May 6, some 20,000 more than on May 5. Another 86,700 people traveled to Hangzhou in east China on May 6. Around 90,000 people are expected to catch trains to Xi'an, capital of northwest China's Shaanxi province, on Monday.

 

Railway stations across China are facing ticket shortages3 as the May Day holiday draws to an end. Media reports say tickets are extremely difficult to purchase in big cities and well-known scenic4 spots.

 

Tickets are also difficult to find for many coach services, but extra services have been introduced to meet the demand.
