Sales of consumer goods hit 320B yuan during holiday

Chinanews, Beijing, May. 8 – From May 1 to May 7, total retail1 sales of consumer goods reached 320 billion yuan, up 15% from the same period last year, with the catering2 business increasing by 17%, according to the information from the Ministry3 of Commerce (MOC).

 

Consumption expansion was the main theme for this year’s May Day holiday. Retailers4 thought of every means to boost consumption and to get rid of various kinds of sales tricks. Consumption in commodity goods, sports and cultural activities, and leisure activities all increased this year, said MOC.

 

Chinese people's ideas on consumption are changing for the better. Consumption on health products and on learning new things has become the new trend in society. With people’s living standards having improved, Chinese people have paid more and more attention to their health and realized the important role that knowledge has played in their lives. So, in large cities, such as Shanghai, Beijing, and Guangzhou, people no longer met just for dinner parties, but went out together and did some physical exercises to burn off the excessive calories during the long holiday.

 

Meanwhile, spending a day on the farmland has become a trendy thing to do. During the holiday, many urbanites ate and lived in the countryside, which boosted the consumption in the agricultural sector5. Being close to nature became a favorite choice for many city dwellers6.
