Poll: 60% Chinese wish to be heroes

Chinanews, Beijing, May 9 - Chinanews.com.cn launched a poll on the general public's view on heroes recently, finding that over 60% of the respondents wish to be heroes.

 

About 80% of the 4,000-plus respondents (60% under 35) don't think heroes have to be celebrities1, for there can be various definitions of the word "hero" in different situations, and sometimes, ordinary people can be heroes, too. According to nearly 50% of the respondents, Mao Zedong is their most admired hero.

 

"The result of the poll is just what we have expected," said Xia Xueluan, a sociological professor from Peking University. In Xia's opinion, China today is witnessing a "heroless" era, but an era of ordinary people. Idols2 nowadays usually have more exciting and entertaining features than those in the past. However, the general public still shares a similar view of heroes as their predecessors3, and those who have made great contributions to the society will still be admired.

 

However, more than 90% of the respondents don't agree to Xia[‘s idea that it is a heroless era now.
