Chinanews, Beijing, May 11 – The number of pregnancies1 and induced abortions3 among Shanghai teenagers has recently increased. And more and more youngsters below 18 are now entering this group.

 

According to a teenage pregnancy4 hotline in Shanghai, one year ago, teenage pregnancy mainly happened among senior high and college girls, but now, it occurs among students aged5 from 16 to18.

 

The number of abortions peaks during the Spring Festival, May Day or National Day holidays and in the final term of the college study, said Zhang Zhengrong, a doctor from No. 411 Hospital. Many wait to take abortion2 till those weeklong holidays, 80 percent of whom are girls under 18. Some of these girls have undergone two abortions during the recent months.

 

This hotline in Shanghai receives 50 to 60 calls per day, almost 5,000 calls every year, from teenagers, about 20 to 30 percent of whom call to seek advice on abortion. The proportion was 5 to 8 percent one year ago.

 

Dai Yaohong, vice6 director of Shanghai Adolescence7 Education Association, believes that the sharp increase in teens abortions is an apparent sign that urban Chinese are becoming sexually active increasingly younger, but with little knowledge of or access to contraception. This should call forth8 the attention of school authorities, parents and the society as a whole.
