Chinanews, Beijing, May 14 – A middle class group is taking root and starting to grow in the current Chinese society. However, their development is repelled1 by the upper class, who want to use their power to control social resources to their own advantages and to constrain2 the development of the newly emerging middle class, says Zhang Wanli, an associate researcher at the Sociology Department under the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, in her recent article published in the People’s Daily Forum3.

 

Judging from their professional structure, competitive edge, and social impact, the middle class group are somewhat superior to workers and farmers in respect of educational background, thinking and professional expertise4. Theoretically, these people should be regarded as social elites5. However, their prospect6 and what they have achieved in society are not as good as most people would expect. In fact, these people have had a hard time climbing up the social ladder and felt somewhat trapped in their development. In essence, such phenomenon might have resulted from the fact that China has been undergoing a social structural7 change quite unique to China, Zhang says.

 

For one thing, development of the middle class has been repelled by the upper class group. By taking advantage of their administrative8 power, the upper class try to dominate social resources by constraining9 the development of the new middle class. As a result, individual people in the middle class group might feel that they have experienced unfair treatment in career and social development. Although they have a good educational background and fairly good professional knowledge, still these advantages can not guarantee them a good job. As a whole, the middle class group have found it hard to climb up the society ladder, Zhang notes.
