Chinanews, Beijing, May 25 - Some 600 pupils in Beijing spent last weekend in downtown areas of the city conducting a survey, in which they smiled at passers-by, and took down their reactions. However, more than 70% of passers-by were totally indifferent1 to their smiles, while some 10% smiled back.

 

The pupils were from Fuxingmenwai No 1. Elementary School. They chose Changan Street, Beijing Exhibition Hall Square, Changan Shopping Mall and communities near their school to conduct the survey. 2,188 of the 3,127 respondents were indifferent, 536 seemed to be interested, and only 403 smiled back.

 

Actually, many Beijingers are not used to smiling at passers-by. "Beijingers smile too little. Even when somebody smiles at them, they don't know they should smile back," said Wang, a 5-grade pupil. "I find that elders are kinder than young people," said Ma, a 4-grade pupil.

 

"Urbanites today communicate less and less emotionally," said Wang, the designer2 of the survey and a teacher of the school. "I don't think people should feel like strangers to each other, especially in school. Some of my students won't look at their teachers when they walk past the latter."
