Chinanews, Shanghai, May 26 – The Ninth Shanghai Municipal Party Congress ssession was kicked off in Shanghai on Thursday. At the opening day, many Shanghai residents gathered in front of the TV screen in community centers and shops to watch the live broadcast of the opening ceremony. This indicates that apart from the 1.5 million Party members in Shanghai, the ordinary residents are also greatly concerned with the political event.

 

“We sincerely hope that the newly elected Party leaders in Shanghai can be honest and upright, and serve the interest of the public. We also hope that they can do some practical things and build Shanghai into a more beautiful city,” a resident in Shanghai told this reporter.

 

On Thursday, many retired1 Party members gathered at their community centers early in the morning. They waited in front of the TV to watch the live broadcast of the opening ceremony of the Party Congress meeting.

 

“I hope that the newly elected Party leaders can be clean, upright and trustworthy. I hope that they can do something to solve the unemployment problem for ordinary people, make medical services accessible to everyone, and do something in building a harmonious2 society, ” said Dong Xiaoying, a Party member working in the Xuhui Nanzhaoxiang Residents’ Committee.

 

This reporter randomly3 stopped some taxi drivers on the street and found that most of them were listening to the radio broadcast of the Party Congress opening ceremony.

 

“I just took two people who came to Shanghai from other places. As soon as they sat on my car, they asked me to tune4 in to the live broadcast of the opening ceremony. I noticed that they listened attentatively and said that Shanghai should make more progress in future,” a taxi driver told this reporter.

 

“Recently, many Shanghai residents are very much concerned with stock market performance. Now, they turn their attention to the ongoing5 Party Congress in Shanghai. This shows that Shanghai people do hope that newly elected city leaders will remain in high spirits and become good leaders of the public,” said one Shanghai resident, who might be speaking out what many people were thinking about.
