| Chinanews, Beijing, Jun. 5 – “My child has only 6 hours of sleep,” several parents were telling a teacher in front of an elementary school in Haidian District, Beijing. Ms. Han, the teacher from the school, revealed that most of her pupils couldn’t go to sleep until midnight, and yet they were required to arrive in school at 7 the next morning.
A latest survey launched in Beijing reveals that most elementary and secondary school students have insufficient1 time sleep. However, the central government has required that primary school pupils should be guaranteed 10 hours’ sleep, and the State Council has also required schools and parents to ensure that students have enough time to take exercises before going to bed. Several factors make students sleep less: heavy study pressure and too much homework, etc. Insufficient sleep will bring about several problems, like overweight, poor memory, and lack of creativity. The Ministry2 of Health revealed that the obesity3 rate in China has reached that of developed countries. In Beijing, Shanghai and other coastal4 cities, the rate is even higher. In Beijing, the obesity rate of boy students is 12.3%, and that of woman students is 6.6%.
