Chinanews ,Kunming, June 5 - According to Yunnan Provincial1 Seismological Bureau, a project to enhance residential2 security against possible earthquakes in the future will be kicked off before the end of 2007. The project will cost approximately 5 billion yuan and 10 years, to guarantee that all the houses in rural Yunnan will be able to survive earthquakes as strong as magnitude 6 on the Richter scale.

 

About 94% of Yunnan is located at mountainous region, where many houses, particularly houses in rural areas, are prone3 to fall victim to earthquakes and landslides4 caused by earthquakes. Besides, quite a large number of farmers in Yunnan can't afford to renovate5 their old and fragile houses, not to mention that 70% of houses here are built of wood and clay, which appearently are not strong enough against earthquakes. There are even no groundworks, grids6 or structural7 columns in some of those houses. No wonder every earthquake in Yunnan causes great disasters to the rural areas, even slight ones.

 

Thus the Yunnan provincial government is planning to renovate at least one million houses here, to prevent such tragedies in the future. Some of the houses might be torn down and rebuilt, and their owners will get an allowance of 2,000 to 2,500 yuan each.
