Chinanews, Shanghai, Jun. 8 – Officials from the consulate-general of Israel in Shanghai and representatives from 26 Israeli enterprises1 visited Shanghai’s Hongkou District on Wednesday. These enterprises contributed 600 thousand yuan on that day to commemorate2 the friendship established between the Israeli and Chinese people during the Second World War

 

The Israeli consulate-general thought such activity was more meaningful than holding a reception party. All these money will be used to renovate3 the rest homes for senior citizens in Shanghai.

 

During the Second World War, Shanghai received some 30 thousand Jewish refugees4 from Germany and territories occupied by German troops in Europe. Before the Pacific War broke out in 1941, there were still 25 thousand refugees living in Shanghai. For them, Shanghai has “Noah's Ark.”

 

Uri Gutman, Consul-General of Israel in Shanghai, said that most of these refugees lived in Hongkou District. Local citizens often shared food and other materials with these refugees, which made them still remember the kindness of the Shanghainese.
