　“风中之烛”完成于1973年，是艾尔顿强以一个影迷的身分，看待他的偶像：玛丽莲梦露绚烂而悲惨的一生。歌中描述玛丽莲梦露虽然贵为好莱坞的超级巨星，却沦为当时权贵玩物（包括当时的美国总统约翰甘乃迪），完全没有自我，终日与寂寞为伴。甚至当她自杀身亡，媒体依然不放过她，将她裸体陈尸于自宅的情景，钜细靡遗的报导出来。歌词中多次出现的Norma Jean，就是玛丽莲梦露的本名。
