Chinanews, Beijing, June 11 - Maotai Town of Zunyi, Guizhou Province is famous for the Maotai Spirit produced here. Nearly every visitor to the town is impressed by the booming liquor industry, which is a perfect combination of traditional distillation1 method and modern technology. Maotai really deserves the name of the "NO.1 liquor producer in China", for there are more than 400 liquor distilleries in the town with a population of only some 20,000.

 

In fact, over 300 of those 400 liquor distilleries are not certified2, and many tons of fake Maotai are produced in such distilleries every year. "Most of fake Maotai Spirit is from Maotai Town," said a Maotai resident, who has been taking part in making fake Maotai Spirit for several years.

 

In fact, it is impossible for ordinary people to tell the differences between fake and real Maotai Spirit, except price.

 

"Everybody here has to thank the Maotai Spirit, for it is the lifeline of the town," said a local official. "It has brought us wealth," added an elder.

 

However, the great fame of the liquor is abused by some of the Maotai residents who produce fake Maotai Spirit. Besides, the great demand-supply gap of the real Maotai Spirit leaves a quite wide space for fake ones to survive.

 

The reporter of China.com.cn visited a small distillery, and its boss promised that he could offer some "cheap but good" Maotai Spirit, which obviously is fake.

 

"Though fake Maotai Spirit has brought great economic benefit, it is destroying the local liquor industry by forfeiting3 the prestige of the Spirit," said Hu, the director of the local enterprise administration. "I really don't think liquors of good quality can be produced in such uncertified small workshops."
