Chongqing June 10 - Southwest China's Chongqing and Chengdu were selected as China's first experimental areas on urban-rural co-development.

 

An official with the National Development and Reform Commission indicated that the reforms seek to change the dual1 structure in urban and rural areas, on Saturday at a conference in Chengdu.

 

The ultimate purpose of the reforms, according to him, is for urban and rural residents to enjoy equal rights, public services and living conditions.

 

Chongqing has a population of 31 million, over 80% of which live in rural areas. The rural residents earn only one fourth of that of their urban compatriots. The conditions in Chengdu are similar.

 

"To some extend, Chongqing is the epitome2 of the whole country," said Wang Yang, Party Secretary of Chongqing, "And in that sense, the reforms on Chongqing can be set as an example."

 

According to the plans, reforms would be carried out on both the public financial system and the household registration3 system. Per capita GDP in the experimental area is expected to reach $6500 by 2020, while the ratio of urban and rural incomes reduced to 2.5:1.

 

Chengdu will implement4 similar reforms in an effort to bring about parity5 in social and economic development.
