Chinanews, Beijing, June 18 – China works hard to fight against malfeasance and dereliction. Recently, the Supreme1 People's Procuratorate publicized a report about its work against malfeasance and dereliction over the past 18 months. The report shows that over 6,600 public servants have been punished for dereliction of duty, CCTV reported.

 

Dereliction of duty has been regarded as another form of corruption2. In a sense, it is an even more serious crime than taking bribes3.

 

The Supreme People's Procuratorate investigated the malfeasance and dereliction cases occurring between 2004 and 2006. The information shows that in those three years, the average amount of money involved in every bribery4 case was 460,000 yuan. About 1.15 million yuan was lost in every dereliction of duty case.

 

It is estimated that all those such cases handled by the Supreme People's Procuratorate since 2003 have caused 35.7 billion yuan of direct loss to the state. The ranking positions of officials involved in such cases have also become higher and higher. From July 2005 to the end of 2006, the Supreme People's Procuratorate had punished 218 officials at county level or above, with 11 of them being city-level officials. Former director of the State Food and Drug Administration Zheng Xiaoyu and former vice5 governor of Sichuan were both punished for dereliction of duty.
