China needs to promote its own tea brand

Chinanews, Beijing, June 21 – China has a long history in growing tea. As the largest tea producer in the world, China has many tea brands become household names in China. However, in recent years, although China exports a large amount of tea to other countries, although China has 67,000 factories that process tea leaves, the tea brands in China are not well-known in the global market, China Youth Daily reported.

 

Establishing a famous tea brand in the world has become an urgent task for the Chinese tea processing industry, said Zhu Futang, president of the China Tea Company under the China National Native Produce and Animal By-products Import and Export Corporation.

 

“Britain does not grow any tea. However, everyone knows that Lipton Tea is made in Britain. At present, China does not have any large tea processing companies that can produce a famous tea brand like the Lipton Tea. In the liquor, beverage1 and dairy markets, many large domestic companies have emerged and these companies can produce some famous brand products that are well-known in China. However, in the tea industry, no such big companies have ever appeared in China so far,” said Zhu.

 

In China, there are many varieties of famous tea. Many of these varieties are grown in a particular region. Everybody knows about the Longjing (dragon well) tea of Hangzhou, the Oolong tea of Wuyi Mountain, the Tieguanyin tea of Fujian province, the Biluochun green tea of Jiangsu province, and the Maofeng tea of the Yellow Mountain. Many Chinese people, even some foreigners, are very familiar with these tea varieties. However, nobody could think of any famous tea brands made in China. It is estimated that among all the 67,000 tea processing companies in China, only 1,000 have registered the brand names for their products.

 

In China, most of the tea leaves are grown by individual farmer households. Every farmer owns about one mu (1/6 acre)of tea garden on average. Tea plantation2 has not developed into an industry. As a result, the quantity and quality of the tea can not be guaranteed. Information shows that the tea plantation area in India is only half of the tea plantation area in China. However, India’s tea production volume is relatively3 the same as that of China.

 

At present, Chinese tea leaves sell at US$2 per kilo in the global market. Such tea price is 40% lower than the tea from India, 60% lower than the tea from Sri Lanka, and even 20% lower than that from Kenya.
