Chinanews, Beijing, June 22 – Fifteen years ago, 20-odd-year-old Li Fangyi, a farmer in Anhui, left his hometown to make a living in Zhejiang and Jiangsu provinces. At that time, he only had 300 yuan in his pocket. However, today, the once poor migrant worker has returned to his hometown in his own car, and spent 40 million yuan to establish a down garment factory in Anhui, the Economic Information Daily reported.

 

Li Fangyi is not the only migrant worker to return to his hometown to start his own business. A decade ago, thousands of farmers flocked to large cities with the hope of earning some money to support their lives. Now, some of them, after making a fortune in cities, have returned to rural areas with their investment plans, like Li.

 

In Wuwei County, Anhui, about 400,000 local farmers once left their hometown to earn money outside. Today, 10,000 of them have returned home. They have brought with them the skills and investment ideas they learned in prosperous regions. They have also brought back the money needed to boost the economy in their hometowns. At present, these farmers have established 1,200 companies, ranging from textile companies pharmaceutical1 factories to factories producing electric wires, cables, etc. Every year, these companies pay 380 million yuan of tax to the local government. The tax accounts for 67% of the total local fiscal2 revenue.

 

According to information released by the Township Enterprise Bureau under the Ministry3 of Agriculture, of all the 200 million migrant workers in China, 5 million have returned to their hometowns to start their businesses. The companies opened by these migrant workers account for 20% of the township enterprises in China.

 

Li Fangyi is only an example of such reversing process.

 

“In the past, our work was focused on transferring the surplus labor4 force in the county to other places. Today, the focus of our work has been shifted. We are now trying to attract as many rich migrant farmer workers as possible to come back to our town to start their own businesses here,” an official at Wuwei County told this reporter.
