China handled 12,622 corruption cases in May

Chinanews, Beijing, June 25 – From January to May this year, the anti-corruption1 department of Chinese procuratorial organs put 12,622 corruption cases, with 15,045 people being involved, and the number of cases increasing by 4.6% from the same period last year, the Procuratorial Daily reported.

 

The information was released at the first training session held for directors responsible for anti-corruptive cases in Zhuhai. The training session was organized by the International Association of Anti-Corruption Authorities.

 

Among all cases, 8,133 were regarded as big cases, accounting2 for 64.4% of the total cases being filed. Big bases increased by 10% from the same period last year. About 1,073 officials above the county level were punished, accounting for 7.1% of the officials placed on file and 2.4% more than the same period last year. The number of people sued and the number of cases in which the defendants3 were judged guilty both increased compared with three years ago.

 

Some achievement was made in fighting against commercial bribery4. From January to May, China placed on file 4,700 cases related with commercial bribery, with 5,056 people being involved, or 15% more than the same period last year. The total sum of money involved in these bribery cases reached 405 million yuan. Among these bribery cases, 3,027 were regarded as big cases, accounting for 64.4% of the total. About 640 officials above the county level were punished, accounting for 12.7% of the officials placed on file. 2,886 commercial bribery cases occurred in construction projects, land transfer or medicine purchase deals and other three key sectors5, accounting for 61.4% of the total cased placed on file.

 

The anti-corruption departments at Chinese procuratorial organs will strengthen their efforts to fight against corruption cases involving senior officials who trade power for money. In these cases, some officials might abuse their administrative6 power in employment issue or in approving some projects. Some people in state-owned enterprises might be involved in embezzlement7 cases, while some might take bribes8 in the process of building a socialist9 countryside, etc.
