| Chinanews, Shanghai, Nov. 24 – In the past newlyweds in Shanghai had to follow many traditions, one of them being that both bride and bridegroom had to be local citizens. Currently, more and more brides and bridegrooms are from other parts of China.
Shanghai Bureau of Civil Affairs reveals that such trans-regional marriage in Shanghai is increasing by 2 percent annually1. Nearly 40 percent of newlyweds are trans-regional marriages. Experts point out that many newlyweds have given up traditional regionalism, which has also helped to create more marriages. Last year there are 100,297 couples registered for marriage, 35,903 of them being trans-regional marriages. Among 79,032 newlyweds in the first half of this year, 26,788 are trans-regional marriages. Some 10 years ago, a Shanghai girl would refuse to date a boy from other parts of China, but now the trend has changed. Currently a high-quality young man registered in a matrimonial agency will bring many local girls' calls. The latter say that the most important thing for them to choose husbands is their personality and capability2, no matter where they come from. Girls from other parts of China also wish to date Shanghaiese.
