Chinanews, Beijing, July 10 - According to a report by the People’s Daily, the CPI in China had grown by 2.9% in the first five months of 2007, and the monthly1 growth rate in last May was 3.4%. It is estimated2 that the CPI growth in the first 6 months of 2007 should be 3%, and the annual figure will break 3%.

 

The price hike in the international market is the first reason for the CPI leap in China. With many developed countries starting to make use of bio-energy, the demand for corn and beans has greatly increased, which has caused the price hike of grains, and other grain-related products like cooking oil, meat and eggs.

 

Besides, the cost of agriculture in China has also increased, as both the wage of agricultural workers and the cost of the means of agricultural production have increased. Thus the price of agricultural products should rise in China.

 

Last, the wide demand-supply gap3 in the Chinese market has also contributed to the rise of CPI. For example, the pork price drop last year had caused many live pig suppliers to close out their pigs, thus the great demand in the market this year could not be met.
