| Chinanews, Beijing, July 10 – Chinese people's fad1 for stock market, which began in March, this year, had been greatly dampened by the stock tumble dominating the market these days. According to statistics released by the China Securities Depository and Clearing Corporation Limited, by the end of last week the number of new stockholders that had just opened an account in the securities market had plummeted2 to 62,953, the Beijing Morning Post reported.
As stock index hit new lows in less than one month, the daily number of new stockholders, an indicator3 to market's confidence for the securities market, broke the 300,000, 200,000, and 100,000 marks continuously. 62,953 people were regarded as the lowest number of newly registered stockholders after the stock market resumed service in the Spring Festival in mid-February this year. Many new stockholders have not make much profit these days. On the other hand, the price of many stocks has dropped dramatically as less and less capital went into the market. Liu, a veteran stockholder, told this reporter that the easy money he earned by short-term investments in April and May were almost gone completely. In spite of this, Old Liu still felt he was relatively4 lucky since his principal was still there. “I lost some money. However, I might think that the money was paid for learning a lesson in the securities market,” Liu said. Compared with Liu, many new stockholders suffered from a heavy loss. According to a recent online survey, 70% of new stockholders that opened an account this year lost money. Junk shares witnessed the most drastic drop since May 30, when the Ministry5 of Finance suddenly announced raising the stock trading stamp tax. On the other hand, the prices of blue chips and secondary stocks, which were bought largely by institutional investors6, experienced the smallest fluctuations7. The price of stocks whose main investors were individual investors rather than fund institutions also dropped greatly. As the Shanghai composite index dropped by 30%, the price of many stocks already went down by 50%. In reality, many individual investors might suffer an even heavier loss than the report showed. As the number of new stockholders continues to drop greatly and the Shanghai and Shenzhen stock markets have reported a general loss for many of the stock prices, it can be said that the time in which individual investors control the trend of the market has already gone, said Xu Xiaoyang, a market observer and stock analyst8 from the Yinhe Securities Market.
