11 mln trees to print textbooks every year

Chinanews, Beijing, July 13 – According to a report by Workers Daily, elementary school pupils and high school students in China need nearly 3 billion copies of textbooks every year, which require 550 thousand tons of paper, or 11 million trees.

 

The amazing calculation1 was made by Zhu Yongxin, a member of the Standing2 Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, China’s top advisory3 body.

 

Zhu suggests that students should make the most of every copy of textbooks by recycling them. However, the problem is not easy to solve, as it needs to change the concept4 of the general public in the first place. Besides, the government should work out regulations on the control of publishers gaining extravagant5 profits from textbooks.

 

Nowadays, China has become the second biggest paper and paperboard consumers, and not many Chinese are aware of the severe pollution caused by papermaking, and its great demand for energy.
