12.5% Shanghai kids are too fat

Chinanews, Shanghai August 7 – According to a report by Oriental Morning Post, 16% of Shanghai kids (aged1 between 7 and 17) are overweight, and another 12% are grossly obese2. About 30.37% of Shanghainese aged over 15 have hypertension, while the national proportion is only 17.6%.

 

Several nutritionists took part in the Global Nutrition Forum3 held in Fudan University last week, finding that Shanghainese intake4 of fat has grown by nearly 100% in the past 20 years, but the intake of vitamins, especially Vitamin C, has dropped by almost 30%.

 

In other parts of China, only 8.5% of kids are overweight, and 4.4% are obese. Many adults in Shanghai do have overweight problems, too.
