Chinanews, Beijing, Sept. 20 – Homosexual college students who take AIDS check and participate in related investigation1 will receive 50 yuan of subsidy2, said the Beijing Rainbow Volunteers Work Center, an AIDs organization.

 

By providing free medical checks and issuing questionnaires, the organization hopes to know more about such information as how students are infected with the disease, how much they know about AIDS, and what kind of services they need. The organization will then submit all the information to the China Disease Prevention and Control Center. Based on this information, medical workers will try to work out a program for AIDS prevention. Medical workers will keep students’ records completely confidential3.

 

The medical checks and related survey will be conducted at the Beijing Jingcheng Skin Disease Hospital. All participants will get 50 yuan of subsidy. Students who are diagnosed as having HIV/AIDS virus will get a course of treatment free of charge.

 

About 300 homosexual students will be checked for their AIDS antibody and possible syphilis, said Xiao Dong, the person in charge of the project.

 

Last year, the organization carried out a survey among 526 homosexual students and the survey showed that for 20.5% of the students covered by the survey, their sense of self-protection in sexual activity was rather weak, Xiao noted4.
