Offence reporters got harmed in China

Chinanews, Beijing, September 26 – Nowadays, about 60% of criminal cases in China could not have been cracked without the information and evidence provided by offence reporters. However, as the state has no clear regulations on protection of such informers, many of them have been harmed or even killed by revengeful of the criminals.

 

For example, Guo Guangyun, who reported the corruption1 of Cheng Weigao (executed several years ago), the former secretary of the Henan Provincial2 Committee of the Chinese Communist Party, still goes in constant fear of being murdered by people who want to avenge3 Cheng Weigao for his death..

 

According to the statistics by the Supreme4 People’s Procuratorate, there are nearly 1,200 cases involving murdering or hurting crime informers in China every year, when the figure in the 1990s was no more than 500.

 

“Many witnesses and informers wouldn’t give evidence to the police and procuratorates unless their security is guaranteed. This is a shame, ” said Bai Huiming, deputy director of the Report Office of the Supreme People’s Procuratorate.

 

About 60% of reporters have no direct interest conflicts with the criminals whom they impeach5 against. “It is absolutely understandable for them to remain silent, especially when their lives are threatened,” added Bai.

 

The Supreme People’s Procuratorate promises that it will work out a plan to protect crime informers and witnesses in the foreseeable future.
