Chinanews, Beijing, Sept.26 – In early July 2006, Li Ran, a young woman from Zhejiang Province, graduated from her university. However, only weeks later, she decided1 to marry. When she was still in her honeymoon2, she decided that she would give birth to a baby as quickly as possible so that she could find a job easily. In China, more and more women now choose to give birth to babies soon after their marriages. The reason is quite simple – they don't want to be discriminated3 against in the job market because of the baby issue, the International Herald4 Tribune reported.

 

At present, it is not easy for many young Chinese people to find a job, and it is especially so when the job seeker is a woman. Many employers are reluctant to hire women because they feel that women have a lot of troubles and one of the main “troubles” is that they have to take a leave to give birth to a baby. In many cases, if a woman gets pregnant, she will lose her job. So in order to keep their jobs, many women delay their pregnancy5 plan. Some young women, however, decide that they will give birth to a baby before they enter the job market so that they will not be bothered by the issue any more.

 

For women who decide to become mothers at a young age, they will need to get a lot of help from their husbands and family members. In the case of Li Ran, her husband, who is five years older than her, works as a general manager in a company. So, even if Li decides to stay at home, her husband can earn enough money to support the whole family. In addition, Li's mother-in-law is also willing to help her by taking care of the baby. It is because of this that Li has made her final decision.

 

So, in some sense, a decision like that made by Li Ran is not only the young mother's, it is, after all, a decision made by the whole family.

 

However, according to Xia Xueluan, a professor from the sociology department at Peking University, the decision might lower women's competitive edge in the job market.

 

“Chinese welfare system is far from mature compared with the welfare system in developed countries. In essence, many Chinese women decide to become young mothers because there is discrimination in the job market. So if we want to solve the problem, everybody in society should work together to solve the sexual discrimination imposed on women,” Xia said.
