Sept. 28 - The chairman of Taiwan's ruling Democratic Progressive Party Yu Shyi-kun announced his resignation on Thursday morning, days after he was charged with corruption1 and forgery2.

 

Yu promised he would resign after he was indicted3 last week, saying he would formally resign after the plenary meeting of the DPP on September 30.

 

At a news conference on Thursday morning, he said he had resigned earlier than scheduled because he has different strategies to other party members towards the election next year and a party resolution.

 

Prosecutors4 found that between December 2000 and May 2006, Lu's office staff and assistants used other people's receipts worth 5.63 million New Taiwan dollars to apply for reimbursement5 from the "special funds" for administrative6 leaders.

 

After investigations7, the party's candidate for the 2008 Taiwan leader election Hsieh Chang-ting and his running mate Su Tseng-chang were cleared of the allegations, according to Taiwan media reports.
