Speaking to an audience of 3,000 people including foreign diplomats2 in the Great Hall of the People on the eve of National Day, Wen said: "We will continue to work with all the Taiwan compatriots to oppose and repulse3 separatist activities for 'Taiwan independence' and advance the great cause of China's peaceful reunification."
He made the remarks as Taiwan's ruling Democratic Progressive Party passed a resolution yesterday to assert the island's separate identity.
"We should rectify4 our name to Taiwan and enact5 a new constitution as soon as possible," the resolution said.
In his remarks, Wen also touched on the upcoming 17th Congress of the Communist Party of China.
He said that the meeting is being held at a time when China's reform and development has entered a crucial stage.
"We should fully6 implement7 the scientific concept of development and strive to make even greater progress in building a moderately prosperous society in all respects," he said.
China's reform and opening- up program has greatly fired the initiative and creativity of the people, and brought about new and all-round progress in areas of economic, political, cultural and social development, Wen said.
"We have made great achievements, but there is still a long way ahead. We will meet both opportunities and challenges on the road of advancement," he said.
