Chinanews, Beijing, Oct 8 – Shanghai has become a city that has the highest urbanization level in China, according to recent information released by the National Statistics Bureau.

 

In 2006, China's urban population reached 577.06 million, accounting1 for 43.9% of the country's total population. Compared with 2002, China's urbanization level in 2006 rose by 4.8 percentage points, with the urbanization level increasing by 1.2 percentage points every year on average.

 

In 2006, the urbanization level for the east, central and west regions was 54.6%, 40.4% and 35.7%, respectively. Shanghai became a city with the highest urbanization level in China (88.7%), followed by Beijing and Tianjin, whose urbanization level was 84.3% and 75.7%, respectively. The urbanization level in Guizhou and Tibet was among the lowest, with the former having an urbanization level of 27.5% and the latter 28.2%.

 

Information shows that in 2006, China had 661 cities in total.
