Chinanews, Beijing, Oct 23 – Beijing's four downtown districts, Dongcheng, Xicheng, Xuanwu and Chongwen, have relatively1 few places where people can use as shelters. From now on, Beijing municipal2 government plans to build 20-30 more shelters every year in the city's old downtown districts, according to the recently released Beijing Construction Program for Outdoor Shelters.

 

In Beijing, every citizen owns about 1.5-2.0 square meters of space area as emergency shelters, and each citizen owns about 2.0-3.0 square meters of space area as permanent shelters. However, people living in Beijing's four old downtown districts have not reached this standard with regard to their per capita ownership of space shelter areas. In the four old downtown districts, people's per capita ownership of space shelter area is only a little more than 1 square meter. When earthquake or other disasters occur, it is really difficult for people in these places to find a shelter.

 

According to the new construction program, Beijing will increase more green lots in the parks of the downtown districts so that more shelters can be built there. The municipal government plans to build 20-30 more shelters in the downtown area every year from now on, which is expected to provide safe place for 1.5-2 million people when emergency occurs. In the city's new district areas, about 3-5 more shelters will be built, which are expected to accommodate3 60,000-100,000 people.

 

Before the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, local government will try to build some shelters near the Olympic Village, the Olympic Park, competition venues4, and hotels where the Olympic officials and athletes will live.
