Chinese drivers faced with 'road rage'

Chinanews, Beijing, October 24 – With the number of cars booming in China, it is more likely for Chinese drivers to encounter traffic jams and other conflicts on the road. More and more of them have found that it is easy for them to lose temper in such situations. Some even go mad and attack other vehicles or passers-by.

 

These are the symptoms of “road rage”, a psychological byproduct of auto1 society. It refers to the uncontrollable anger of a driver on the road, and it usually leads to more severe conflicts.

 

Last July, a policewoman in Xi’an kept swearing and calling of a taxi driver names for more than 30 minutes, as his car has caused a scratch to hers. This is a typical case of road rage.

 

“Traffic jam should not be the only reason to blame for road rage, as one’s personality and one’s pressures should also be taken into consideration. A driver with psychological problems is usually more prone2 to fall victim of road rage,” said Gu Kaijie, a psychiatrist3 in Shanghai.

 

Gu’s company has conducted a survey, finding that 59.8% of Chinese drivers have mental problems, particularly drivers of long-distance vehicles. Some 44.4% of private car owners have such problems, too.

 

“If one becomes very violent in a fit of road rage, it is not one’s fault, as one can’t control oneself at that time,” said Gu.
