50% of single-child-generation couples want one child

Chinanews, Beijing, November 5 – Hou Yafei, a researcher of the Beijing College Of Administration, released the result of a poll1 in Beijing on November 4, 2007, saying that more than 50% of single-child-generation couples in Beijing say they are not planning to have a second kid, even if the policy encourages them to. Only 28% of the respondents are willing to have two children.

 

The poll was conducted last year. Averagely, each respondent wishes to have 1.18 kids, showing low birth tendency in Beijing.

 

However, 52% of the parents of the respondents would like to have two grandchildren if the policy permits.

 

Income, child care, housing and family planning policy are the top-4 factors affecting Beijingers’s willingness to having children.

 

Birth rate in Beijing has remained low for nearly 20 years, and now the city is faced with a severe aging problem.
