Nov.7 - Chinese e-commerce portal Alibaba.com soared on its debut1 on the Hong Kong stock market Tuesday with its share price nearly tripling, surpassing all other new stocks listed in the market this year in their first day of trading.

 

Alibaba.com opened at 30 HK dollars (3.9 HK dollars), and after dipping to 28 HK dollars, it kept its upward trend all the way to close at 39.5 HK dollars, jumping 193 percent over its initial public offering (IPO) price. Turnover2 reached 17.4 billion HK dollars.

 

"The good performance of Alibaba in the first day of trading indicates that the stock has a reasonable IPO price," said Ma Yun, chairman of Alibaba.com. The Hangzhou-based company was named after a legendary3 Arabic merchant.

 

Alibaba.com, a business-to-business website started seven years ago, began trading just days after it raised 1.5 billion U.S dollars in its IPO -- the second-largest Internet offering ever after Google in 2004.

 

The IPO was over-subscribed 150-fold, underlining the massive demand for China-related shares, particularly new issues, despite some analyst4 fears that a correction is on the cards in future.

 

Alibaba.com is one of China's fastest growing Internet companies. Its registered members soared to 24.6 million in 2007 from 6 million in 2004. Paying members increased to 255,000 by June 2007 from 77,000 in 2004.

 

The company recorded a net profit of 295.2 million Chinese yuan (39.2 million U.S. dollars) in the six months ended June 2007.

 

Analysts5 said they expect Alibaba.com to post a 63 percent rise in net profit next year to 1.02 billion yuan (136 million U.S. dollars), and a 44 percent increase in 2009 to 1.47 billion yuan ( 196 million U.S. dollars). (One U.S. dollar =7.75 HK dollars).
