Chinanews, Shanghai, Nov. 19 – The Shanghai Municipal Population Control and Family Planning Education Center and the "Shanghai Aiding for Girls with Unexpected Pregnancy1 Hotline" jointly2 launched some courses for girl students at middle schools in Shanghai last Thursday. Girls at Shidong Middle School received a special course that taught them how to date boys, the Labor3 News reported.

 

At 9:40 in the morning, the class with the title “If Love” began. At this class, teachers discussed with students what love was. Some girl students appeared restrained with such topic at first. However, as the teacher, Shao Yichan, urged girl students to participate in interactive4 discussions and do some games with her, more students joined the discussion later. Students discussed a lot of topics that are regarded as sensitive topics among middle school students, topics like what one should do if one likes one's teacher or should one express one's favorable feelings towards the person one likes, etc.

 

At the end of the class, the teacher highlighted a sentence on her slide projector5: Love is sweet. However, if one can't love properly, it might also hurt. The teacher wants to tell the students how to properly deal with the love issue and how to protect themselves.

 

After the class ended, a girl said the class was quite informative6. Before, we would keep our love for someone as a secret and we wouldn't share our feelings with the teacher. This was the first time for us to attend a class that taught us how to love properly. The class was quite interesting, she said.

 

However, some parents were opposed to such class, thinking that it was improper7 for teachers to talk about love issue formally in a class. In fact, they neglected that it was important for kids to know about love and to know how to love properly, Shao said.

 

On Thursday, the Girls Education Caravan8 Event was kicked off in Shanghai. The event focused on teaching kids about the sexual knowledge mostly provided at middle schools. On Thursday, the event organizer brought to students 50 discs about the “If Love” training course and 50 books about love issues. The event organizer plans to spend a year to visit various schools and community centers in Shanghai and issue 1,000 discs on “If Love” courses. It is hoped that through the campaign girl students will become better aware of the negative effects of early pregnancy and their responsibility for their own destiny.
