Chinanews, Urumqi, November 22 – Ms. Li is a retired1 worker in Urumqi, the regional capital of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous2 Region, who lives on a meagre monthly pension of 800 yuan, but at the same time has to support her 45-year-old son, who is unemployed3.

 

Quite a few aged5" target="_blank">middle-aged4 persons in Urumqi now depend on their parents as they can’t find proper jobs, despite the fact that most of these men have families of their own.

 

“I wanted to work, but none of the jobs I got had lasted long,” said Ms. Li’s son, “I have to pay my son’s tuition and fees and my wife earns only 600 yuan every month, thus I have to ask my mother for help.”

 

Take Jiantao Community, the community where Ms. Li lives, as an example. There are nearly 70 persons sharing the same problem with Ms. Li’s son, all aged between 35 and 45.

 

Most parents are tolerant to their middle-aged children who depend on them, but they can’t get rid of the worries for their children’s future when they are gone.

 

A large proportion of such middle-aged persons have neither special skills nor educational credentials6. Judging from their age, it is not likely for them to find good jobs.
