Chinanews, Xi'an, Nov. 23 – They are bold and can endure hardships. They are rich yet have had little education. These are the typical features of the coalmine bosses in Shaanxi, who are opportunists and who make money for their boldness. These coalmine bosses often spend lavishly1: it is very common for them to spend dozens of thousands of yuan for a meal and most of them own good cars that often cost about several million yuan for one. Despite this seemingly luxury life, they also have worries: they wish that their coalmines won't have any accidents and they are afraid that they might be abducted2 some day, the Chinese Business View reported.

 

Most coalmine bosses in Shaanxi have some features which make them look no different from common Chinese farmers: they love to show off their wealth in front of others and they like to strive to keep up with each other. On the other hand, when they become rich, they are willing to donate money for improving local infrastructure3 or bettering local education facilities. This reflects their kindness which can also be seen by many farmers, too. However, most coalmine bosses, once becoming rich, do not want their children to follow their ways. Instead, they hope their children will become politicians when they grow up.

 

In 2003, a message was frequently quoted and clicked on the Internet. The message said, “When we become rich, we will buy two Mercedez Benz cars. We will drive one and the other one will be tugged4 behind…” . The message reflected Chinese people's rich dream. To Mr. Gao, a coalmine bosses in Fugu County, Shaanxi, that dream has already come true.

 

Mr. Gao was born in a remote village in Fugu County. Being raised in a poor family, he had only received three years of education. At 11, he quitted school and began to work to earn money. Right now, he is considered as the leading figure in his hometown both in coalmine industry and in real estate industry. How much property does he own? Nobody knows.

 

“Although many of these people have already become millionaires or even billionaires, they are still mean and observe a rustic5 life style, because that was the life they had led in their childhood. Sometimes they spend lavishly, but that is only because they want to cover up the uncertainties6 at their heart,” Xu Zhiyuan, a columnist7, once wrote this sentence in his blog. And “these people” referred to the coalmine bosses in northern Shaanxi.

 

“In Fugu County, most of the coalmine bosses were once farmers. They had received little education. However, they are bold enough to do things they want to do and most of them do make a lot of money finally,” said Mr. Liu, who was himself a coalmine boss in Xinmin County.

 

“When I was a farmer, I didn't have other skills than working on the land. I had no other choice but to do some business in the coalmine industry. If I ever had some other skills or received some education, I wouldn't have worked in this field,” Liu said.
