About 100,000 young couples plan to tie knots in 2008

Chinanews, Shanghai, Nov. 24 – In Shanghai, many young men and women plan to hold their wedding ceremonies in 2008 when the Olympic Games are held. Some young couples have started to make arrangements for the ceremonies now. According to information released by the Shanghai Municipal Wedding Industry Association, about 100,000 young couples will marry next year, which is otherwise considered as the Olympic Year by many Chinese, the Shanghai Morning Post reported.

 

However, since so many people plan to marry during the Olympic Year, hotels and restaurants that provide wedding banquets have already been fully1 booked now. In Lao Feng Ge, a large restaurant in Shanghai, this reporter happened to meet a young couple who came here to make a reservation.

 

“We went to two restaurants and both of them were fully booked for next year’s wedding banquets. It doesn’t work even if we offer to pay more booking fees or try to settle the matter ‘through the backdoor’, because everybody wants to do it and everybody tries the same way,” the couple said.

 

The couple originally planned to have their wedding ceremony held this year and their parents also wanted them to get married as soon as possible. However, later they changed their mind and both of them wanted to hold it in 2008, or the Olympic Year. If they were lucky enough, they might even have a baby in the Olympic Year, too.

 

They are not the only couple who think this way. In many photo studios, one can easily notice that the number of new couples who go there to take wedding pictures has doubled or tripled than the number this time last year, as many of these couples want to have their wedding ceremonies held in 2008.

 

Normally, our business was in a slack season in winter time. However, this year business is still in peak season at this time of the year. In order to hold their wedding ceremonies in 2008, many new couples want to take their wedding pictures in advance, said a photo studio manager.

 

According to the latest survey done by the Shanghai Municipal Wedding Industry Association, there are fewer couples that marry this year than last year. It estimates that about 80,000 new couples will tie the knots this year.
