Experts analyze Chinese AIDS report

Chinanews, Beijing, Nov. 30 – In China, on the whole, AIDS has a low infection ratio. However, it is prevalent among particular groups of people and in some areas. Of all the 50,000 newly infected AIDS patients that have emerged this year, 44.7% are infected through sex activities, 12.2% infected among MSM (men who have sex with men) group, and 1.1% infected through breast-feeding, according to the "2007 China AIDS Prevention and Treatment Assessment1 Report" issued in Beijing on Thursday.

 

Wu Zunyou, head of the AIDS Department under the China Disease Prevention and Control Center, recently analyzed2 this report.

 

He said that compared with a similar report made in 2005, it could be seen that this year, AIDS had spread at a lower rate than in 2005. Sex activities have become the main transmitting means for AIDS disease, he said. The regions that have a high rate of AIDS infection vary greatly and there are many factors that can lead to AIDS infections. There are two major changes that should be paid attention to, he pointed3 out.

 

Firstly, sex activities have become the main means for AIDS transmission. Nowadays, more and more ordinary people are infected by the disease, indicating that the disease has spread from high risky4 group to ordinary people. According to a report released by the School of Sexology at the Renmin University of China, in 2006, 25% of the adult males between the age of 20 and 60, which is considered as a sexually active age range, have more than one sex partners. The proportion had risen by 9 percentage points compared with that of 2001. The figure tells only one part of the story. Considering that for this group of people, with their sexual habits, their spouses5 should also be viewed as people who have more than one sex partners, the actual proportion will be much greater than 25%. In the latter case, many people are totally unaware6 of the possible dangers they are facing.

 

Secondly7, infection rate among the MSM (men who have sex with men) group has risen sharply. MSM group usually include gays, men who have sex activities with both men and women, and men who have sex activities with men under some special circumstances. In China, the MSM group have some different features from those in Western countries. In China, a considerable number of people in the MSM group have sex with both men and women. So, they might pose an even greater danger to people around them, especially women, because in most of the cases, the women are totally unaware of their situation.

 

In China, about 47,000 people who are infected with AIDS virus belong to the MSM group. For this group of people, their AIDS infection ratio reaches 1%-3%, or even 5% for some people. Although this group of people have been regarded as the most dangerous group under Chinese AIDS monitoring system, China has imposed interfering8 measures to only 10% of the people in this group, according to data released from the China AIDS monitoring stations.
