In the survey made by HSBC, the middle class are defined as people between the age of 20 and 49 and with an annual income between 60,000 – 200,000 yuan. 30% of participants in this survey live in Beijing, 30% live in Shanghai and 30% live in Guangzhou.
In the survey, only 2.2% of the respondents think that ten years later, people earning 60,000 – 100,000 yuan a year will be defined as the middle class. 17% of the respondents say the middle class should make an annual earning of 60,000 – 200,000 yuan; and 33.3% of them say that in the next ten years, people whose annual salary exceeds 500,000 yuan will be classified as the middle class (such criteria3 are the same as that proposed by the Horizon Research Consultancy Group.
68.5% of the respondents think that the middle class should be formed of well-educated people, and the finding is in line with a recent online survey carried out by Yahoo. In that survey, the online respondents, mostly from Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou, said the middle class should have good educational background and professional expertise4.
In addition, 56.1% of the respondents think the middle class should work in professions that enjoy good reputation in society. 49.9% of them say the middle class should enjoy high social prestige and should have their say in society.
However, only 12.7% of the respondents regard themselves as belonging to the middle class, while 43.3% of them say that based on the current national economic development, they might become members of the middle class in about ten years.
