188 modern buildings in Beijing under protection

Chinanews, Beijing, December 28 – 188 modern buildings on 71 sites in Beijing have been designated under municipal-level protection, including the Children's Theatre, the No. 798 Factory and the Friendship Hospital. These buildings will not be demolished1, and it is not allowed to erect2 other buildings on those sites.

 

“Beijing has many magnificent modern buildings, which have been long neglected. Now we take it as one of our top responsibilities to protect those buildings,” said Wen Zongyong, a deputy layout planner of the Beijing Municipal Division of Planning.

 

All these buildings were built between the mid-1800s and 1970s, not including those already on the list of historical heritages.

 

These buildings are all symbols of historical events or the unique character of Beijing. For example, the No.798 Factory is an art zone well-known both at home and abroad.

 

Quite a large number of those buildings are located in the Haidian District.
