How Chinese see China's position in the world?

Chinanews, Beijing, Jan. 1 – When more and more Chinese people now take a global perspective in viewing international issues, they also become more rational than before. At the same time, Chinese people have never forgotten China’s core national interest. Most Chinese public still regard Sino-US relations as the most important bilateral1 relations to China. And, although Taiwan issue appears to be less influential2 in Sino-US relations than in the past, a majority part of Chinese think that it is still the biggest obstacle affecting Sino-US relations. Regarding China’s relations with its neighboring countries, many people think that Sino-Japanese relations are the most important. In addition, over half of the Chinese people do not think that China has already become a powerful nation in the world.

 

The findings were made in a recent poll conducted by Huicong International Information Media Research Center, a media service agent in China, at the request of the Global Times newspaper. Experts say the investigation3 shows that Chinese people take a very rational view in judging global issues and they also have a clear idea of what China’s current position is in the world.

 

The investigation, titled “The World Through the Eyes of Chinese Urbanites”, was carried on December 8-14. Some 1,367 people took part in the poll. They came from five major Chinese cities, namely Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chongqing, and Wuhan.

 

On the issue of Chinese relations with other countries, participants were required to pick only two choices at most, and the result shows that 78% of the Chinese say China’s relations with the United States are the most important, followed by Japan, Russia, and EU, which account for 48.7%, 19.8% and 13.2% of all the answers, respectively. Not many people think that Chinese relations with African countries are important at the moment, since only 6.2% of the people picked up the choice. In regard to China’s relations with its neighboring countries, the proportions that picked Sino-Japanese relations and Sino-Russian relations reach 60.2% and 51.5%, respectively, both exceeding half of the total number. In addition, about 10% of the people regard Sino-Indian relations and China’s relation with the Korean Peninsula as important.

 

While nearly 70% of the people say Sino-US relations are the most important, about the same proportion of people (70.8%) also hold that Taiwan issue is still the biggest problem affecting such relations. 40% of the people say trade frictions4 are the biggest obstacle between China and the United States, and the proportion is only next to those who picked up Taiwan question.

 

Sino-Japanese relations have improved in recent years. However, 39.2% of the people say the improvement is “only temporary,” thinking that relations between the two countries will surely experience ups and downs in the future. Still, 29.4% of the people think that Sino-Japanese relations “might turn for the better in future”, and there are 12.1% of them who think that the improved relations “will definitely last long in future.”

 

Besides Japan, many Chinese people regard Russia as an important country in China’s relations with its neighboring countries. After “the Year of Russia” was observed in China in 2006, Chinese people now know more about the country. Some people (42%) say that its rich oil resources had a deep impression on them and some (41.9%) say they were more impressed by the country’s image as a military power in the world.

 

As to China’s relations with EU, 34.8% think such relations have been improving in 2006. However, 43% of the people point out that China’s trade frictions with EU are increasing, and 24.4% of them feel that European countries are “more alert to China now.”
