| Chinanews, Beijing, Jan. 7 – According to statistics released by the Mayor Charity Forum1 held in Wuxi, Jiangsu Province, there are 280 thousand nongovernmental charitable organizations in China, with 64.9 percent of donations coming from Chinese enterprises.
The China Charity Federation2 (CCF) was founded in 1994, which shows that China has improved its charity system. In the early 21st century, charities have developed very well in China. Fan Baojun, director of CCF, said that 280 thousand nongovernmental charitable organizations had been registered in China’s civil affairs authorities by 2005. “Many professional organizations have also been set up in recent years,” he said. It is estimated that civil affairs authorities have received 28.4 billion yuan (US$3.66 billion) worth of donations, including 18 billion yuan (US$2.3 billion) in cash. More than 1.2 billion cotton-padded clothes have also been collected through various charity channels, to help improve the living conditions of the poor. Currently there are 210 charitable organizations from all over the country registered in CCF as group members. In disastrous3 incidents like the flood in southern China in 1998, SARS epidemic4 in 2003 and tsunami5 in Southeast Asia in 2005, they raised several billion yuan to help victims overcome the difficulties.
