由汶川地震想到的“地震”相关词汇

    国家地震台网测定，北京时间5月12日14时28分，四川汶川县发生7.8级地震。地震给四川及邻近省份造成了重大伤亡和财产损失。

　　The　Sichuan　provincial¹　seismological　bureau　said　more　than　1,180　tremors²　up　to　six　magnitude　have　been　recorded　as　of　5:00　am　on　May　13.　

　　四川省地震局称，截至5月13日凌晨5点，该地区共发生1180多次余震，最高震级达六级。

　　In　another　badly-hit　city　of　Mianzhu,　which　is　less　than　50　kilometers　away　from　the　quake　epi-center,　more　than　1,000　people　were　reported　dead　and　another　5,000　were　buried　as　of　11:30　pm　on　Monday,　according　to　the　local　government.

　　距离震中不到50公里的绵竹是另一受地震重创的地区，据当地政府报告，截止周一晚上11:30，那里已有1000多人死亡，另有5000人被埋。

　　在上述报道中，出现了一些跟地震(earthquake)相关的词汇，如下：

　　1.tremor就是“震动、颤动”的意思，earth　tremor一般表示“轻微地震”。　

　　2.magnitude(里氏震级中用以衡量地震强度的单位)就是“震级”。

　　3.epicenter指的就是“地震中心”或“震中”。

　　除此之外，还有几个表达需要提一下，“地震波”可以是earthquake　wave　或者seis-mic　wave，后者是更为专业的说法；研究地震的学科叫做seismology(地震学)；而地震之后的“余震”为aftershock。
