Spanish tenor¹ Placido Domingo is to undergo "preventive surgery" and will be unable to perform for the next six weeks, his spokesman has said.

Domingo, 69, sought medical assistance after suffering from abdominal（腹部的） pain during a performance in Tokyo recently.

He has pulled out of a London production of Handel's Tamerlano, which was scheduled to take place in March.

Nancy Seltzer said after the operation doctors will have a "better idea" when Domingo can return to his schedule.

Ms Seltzer would only describe the procedure as "medically recommended preventive surgery."

In a statement, London's Royal Opera House said: "After being in physical（身体的，物质的） discomfort³ and lower abdominal pain for over a week during his performances in Tokyo, Placido Domingo decided⁴ to return to New York for a complete physical check-up."

US tenor Kurt Streit, who was originally due to sing the role of Bajazet, is replacing Domingo.

Ticket-holders are being offered back 20% of their face value（票面价值） in the form of a credit note "in recognition of（按照，承认） the withdrawal⁵ of such an exceptional artist in a rarely performed opera".
