First Writing Ceremony 开笔礼

The First Writing Ceremony, also called Qi Meng （Enlightenment） Ceremony, was a very important ceremony for every student before they were admitted to school.

“开笔礼”，也叫“启蒙礼”，是学生入学读书之前举行的一个非常重要的仪式，（俗称“人生第一大礼”）。

这里的First Writing Ceremony就是“开笔礼”的意思。启蒙教育开笔礼一般在Confucius temple（孔庙）举行，孩子们要穿上traditional costumes（传统服装），老师们give a red dot on pupil’s forehead（在学生们的额头上点红痣），名为opening the wisdom eye （“开天眼”）。学生们toll a bronze bell（撞铜钟）表示新学期的开始。

参加“开笔礼”仪式的家长和老师表示，开笔礼不仅给孩子们上了别开生面的第一课，也让孩子们领略到中华传统文化，发扬working hard（刻苦学习）、respecting teachers and parents（尊师孝亲）等中华民族的traditional virtues²（传统美德）。
