tipping point 临界点

The amount of debris¹ orbiting the Earth has reached "a tipping point" for collisions, which would in turn generate more of the debris that threatens astronauts and satellites, according to a US study released on Thursday.

美国上周四发布的一份报告称，地球轨道上太空垃圾的数量已经达到“临界点”，有撞击风险，而后可能产生更多碎片，威胁宇航员和人造卫星的安全。

文中的tipping point就是指“临界点”。Tip原意是指“倾斜，翻倒”，比如弄翻了瓶子，就可以说tip the bottle over。Tipping point（临界点）有时也被翻译成“引爆点”或“转折点”，意思是发展到一定程度会产生某种质的改变。

“太空垃圾”一般用space junk/debris来表示，其中包括defunct/ discarded satellite（报废卫星）、spent rocket bodies（火箭残骸）等等，一般在low-Earth orbit（近地轨道）运行。目前我国也在加紧研究manned space mission（载人航天计划），并将发射“天宫一号”。
